The Ethics Committee

After some quickfire philosophy to warm up the brain, the day begins in earnest with a look at a variety of experiments, past, present, future and fictional.

Which ones would the participants allow if they were the ethics committee of a university, and which would they forbid?

We continue to explore difficult contemporary issues in medical and scientific ethics, such as…

  • saviour siblings
  • hybrid embryos
  • the Large Hadron Collider
  • geo-engineering
  • living wills
  • and abortion

…introducing some technical elements of philosophy such as the doctrine of double effect, the actions/omissions debate and different views on the moral value of the natural world.

This is serious stuff, intended to prepare pupils for interviews at the highest level, so it’s peppered with deliberately lighter intervals.
